leadership and organization
The spiritual leader of the Sufi Way is Pir Elias Amidon, in the direct lineage of Sufi Inayat Khan. He is supported by an advisory council of senior teachers known as the Jamiat. Together the Jamiat and the Pir are committed to maintaining the heart-purpose of the order – awakening and service – and assuring the continuity of the inner school. In addition to the Jamiat there are other teachers and guides who conduct programs or work individually with students.
The Sufi Way understands itself primarily as a school or training ground, not a club or cult of some kind. While there naturally occurs a sense of friendship and community among students of the inner school, the independence and integrity of each person is valued. Some people become involved with the Sufi Way for a certain period of their lives and then move on; others stay associated throughout their lives, and as they mature they often turn to teaching or guiding others.
Regarding costs, the Sufi Way is not a business venture or institution. Membership fees are welcome but not required, and every effort is made to keep the costs for programs reasonable. In many cases, teachers and guides volunteer their time. Dana for teachers (anonymous donations) are gratefully accepted.
